Feteasca Neagra is a variety of Romanian grapes, from which red and rosé wines are made! It is also found under the names "Black Girl's Poem", "Black Bird" or "Swallow's Tail", being appreciated in the lands all over the country. Here is his story!

Short history

The first mentions of this variety appeared at the end of the 18th century. Initially, it was cultivated only in a few vineyards in Muntenia and Moldova. However, it later spread to the rest of the country, as it adapted to the growing conditions of the hills and plains. Currently, among the producing regions are Banat, Crisana, Maramures, Dobrogea Hills, Transylvania Plateau and Danube Terraces. There are over 3,000 hectares for Feteasca Neagra , the starting point being the Uricani wine center, which is located in Iasi County.

 

Being present since the time of the Dacians, it has become one of the oldest varieties in Europe. It is especially known for its increased resistance to frost and drought. However, during periods without rainfall it may need irrigation.

Characteristics of the wines obtained

These grapes are medium in size and the ripening of the berries begins in September. It is easy to accumulate a sugar content that exceeds 200 g / l! As for the alcohol concentration, it reaches somewhere around 12% and both dry or semi-dry and sweet wines can be obtained. The final aroma of Feteasca Neagra differs depending on each situation, but it will often be similar to that of blackberries, black cherries or prunes! You can also feel notes of vanilla, cinnamon, pepper or other spices.
