If the idea of a Christmas gingerbread house seems a bit complicated to you, we are sure that your junior (or partner) would also enjoy some traditional honey gingerbread. That's why we decided to offer you this fluffy gingerbread recipe that will make you lick your fingers!
How to prepare gingerbread is relatively simple. You will start by combining the dry ingredients: flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda and salt.
Use the mixer to beat the butter with the sugar for 2-3 minutes, until a homogeneous cream is obtained. In this cream add the whole egg, with egg whites and yolks, molasses, and then gradually incorporate the dry ingredients. In the case of the gingerbread recipe with honey, molasses is replaced with honey – some appreciate this flavor more. There is also the fasting gingerbread version that you can consider for certain periods of the year.
The result is a dough that you will turn over on the worktop, powdered with flour. A short kneading of 1-2 minutes is enough, after which a round mash of dough is formed, which is wrapped in food foil and left in the fridge for an hour. This waiting time is what makes the gingerbread recipe last so long. If it is up to you to continue on the same day, the dough can stay cold overnight.
Once the dough has cooled, place it between two baking sheets and roll it with a rolling pin until you get a sheet half a centimeter thick. The most fun moment for children follows, when you will cut the dough with special forms – later, it is placed in the baking tray.
If you plan to try, however, to make a gingerbread house that mimics grandma's house from a children's story, make sure you cut the dough pieces so that you can then assemble them in the desired construction.
Bake the dough for 10 – 12 minutes in a preheated oven at 170 degrees; the gingerbread is ready when it takes on a golden hue. Be sure to use a suitable baking tray , not too high!
The time the dough has to stay in the fridge can be used to get the icing sugar icing. Powdered sugar, lemon juice and egg whites are mixed in the mixer bowl for 5-7 minutes until smooth and a viscous consistency. Depending on the colors you want to get, you will separate this mixture into several containers to add food coloring and different flavors.
Once you add the dyes, the glaze is diluted with cold water added with a teaspoon, until you get the consistency of a cream. The gingerbread icing is ready!
